You are not happy at work? You always wanted to change industry and you have a passion of a specific subject. You don't try because you don't have any contacts in that industry...
Change that: be proactive and be visible! Nowadays, there are many things you can do to create opportunities: first work on your cv, research with networking groups may be helpful, show your expertise and passion and create a blog...
Please find below a few tips I invite you to check before you post your cv.
* Start with your key assets and your goal * Show what you have done * Put your job title first * Show how dynamic you were (initiatied, implemented, successfully, achieved...) If the company is not famous, describe its size and its industry * don't underestimate the other section and talk about your passion / involvement in association... ... But be specific (no "I like reading, going to the cinema and horse riding"! * In the file's name, I would put the date of last update (2006 March Chris Langlois)
How many times did I hear about friends of friends who have been looking for a job for months... The first question I would like to ask is: what have they done so far? How did they target the recruiters? How well did they manage the relationship? How visible are they? And the first step... Can I see their cv?
The cv: seduice the recruiter / create the interest The cv is only the first step of a usualy long process. First step, but already a critical one! Your goal is to get a meeting. You could be the best in your industry, except if your famous and/or visible, you need to have a powerful cv.
What have you done yet? Where do you stand in your research? Who have you targeted and how? Have you exhausted all the possibilities? Have you done if properly and followed up properly?
Stay positive and optimistic As long as you know you still have some companies to approach, some follow up to do, a new industry to explore... There is no point being depressed and pessimistic! I know it is easy to say, but think about it and you should realize it too.
You were unsuccessful so far: understand the reason why and use it as a strength! Think about your differentiators, and think about the recruiter. The secret to get a job, to win a new client, to develop good personal relationship is to listen and to put yourself in people's shoes.
