First, I would like to make a statement: spam exists, but it is not as bad as you may think with social networks.
It starts to get annoying if you register to many social networks, and you don't configure your contact settings accordingly to your needs.
Let's take my example: I love Networking and I am probably member of 20+ social networks (I like to test new services, and to meet people from different backgrounds, countries and industries)
I don't get spammed. Occasionally, I receive some very generic contact requests but statistically it is very minimal!
The problem comes from services such as Plaxo, which enable you to send your updated profile to all your contacts...
I found a good article from Tony about that problem:
Editor's Blog: Social networking faux pas
Do I know you... ?
